Did you google “what to wear to a photoshoot” the days leading up to your booked session? This is probably one of the more frequently asked questions I get from my clients. My clients find that despite what it looks like in the mirror or in real time, it could look a lot different behind the lens. Now, I am finding there is too much pressure put on the topic of ‘what to wear to a photoshoot.’ Despite popular belief, it can actually be very simple!
I’m an all year round photographer who services Western Canada including Alberta and British Columbia. I reside in Fort McMurray, Alberta so things get a little chilly during the winter months. That’s when I tend to take my photoshoots inside. Inside photoshoots during the winter make choosing the right outfit a little easier – you don’t have to worry about the elements! In the warmer months, we take your photoshoot outside, so having lots of options (maybe layers) is key.
This concept of the best outfit for your photoshoot inspired me to start the Rose Warren client closet. Throughout the years, I have collected a variety of different styles for women and children that I find are perfect for every photoshoot. Complimentary to every Rose Warren Photography shoot is access to my client closet. It’s filled with a variety of styles and designs to make you feel the best for your very special day – whether that’s a family photoshoot, couples photoshoot, portrait photoshoot or engagement photoshoot.
My client closet focuses on colours that I know match every element and look great behind the camera lens. The pieces were picked specifically to bring out the best features and can easily have accessories added where you see fit. Did I mention they’re comfortable?! I think it’s so important to be comfortable during your photoshoot. You should feel like yourself!
Here’s the breakdown of the perfect outfit for your next photoshoot:
Colours
You would think that neutral colours must be the only colours applicable for your photoshoot outfit. Wrong! Although neutral colours are safest, it’s also important to consider which colours really help the elements (nature and/props) pop. As well as, what colour looks best for your skin tone, hair colour and even eye colour. As you can tell by the Rose Warren Client Closet, I love deep reds, greens and boho style colours.
Accessories
Who would have thought some earrings, a necklace even hairs accessory could really up level your photos. My favourite is when a client brings an accessory that is meaningful to them like a family heirloom or a gift from a loved one. This makes your photos that much more sentimental.
Make Up & Hair
A photoshoot is not the time to try a new haircut or colour – I’ve heard of some horror stories! It is a great time to style your hair with a bit more glamour then you usually would. As for make up, less is more when it comes to a photoshoot! Have you ever noticed that despite wearing make up to your photoshoot, the photos look like you’re barely wearing any? It’s a fact. If you’re thinking of hiring a make up artist, I’d highly recommend. They always get it right!
What to Avoid
I’m a big supporter of personal style, and although colours like hot pink and neon greens don’t always look great behind the lens, I will still work with a client to bring those elements in if they want! No colour, accessory or element is off limits in my opinion. However, it’s key to discuss style and tone of your photoshoot beforehand so I can make sure everything flows properly and you get the best photos at the end of your service!
Does Comfort Really Matter?
Yes! In my experience, short term discomfort is feasible. However, for a family photoshoot I recommend prioritizing comfort especially when kids are involved. The best captured moments are when you and your family are in your element and truly acting as yourselves.
